Phoenix Shot Tower soars high into the sky! Built in 1828, I'm told that it was the tallest structure in the U.S. when it was built and held the record for 18 years until Trinity Church was built in NYC. As a free-standing structure, the shot tower remained the tallest until the Washington Monument was built in D.C. in 1884.
Why build a tall chimney-looking building with windows? Lead shots for ammunition were made here. The molten lead was poured through a sieve at the top of the tower, solidified into spherical balls as it fell, and landed in a pool of water
More to come on this tower tomorrow.
