SB-800 & Quantum Meltdown and Death of a Flash Gun

Check out the bubbles!
The lens was starting to melt and creep - I thought that it would be made from glass ...
SB-800 & Quantum Meltdown and Death of a Flash Gun by sportpictures.
Follow the instructions - the SB-800 is too expensive to burst into flames - and smells real funny when its about to. Apologies to the Strobist community - forgive me this is for educational purposes, don't gun your flash gun or it will melt! Just like the manual says ... update 25 December 2007 - the SB-800 is no more, I was messing dialing in some manual setting and one almighty pop - one expensive Christmas. I now have one of the worlds most expensive rattles!
Good news I have found a repairer that should be able to do the repair for around 1/6th or 1/3rd of the cost of a new one. Both of which are very welcome outcomes. I've also come to the conclusion that I need two flash guns in the bag.

I've just recently collected the repaired flashgun, which is good but alas I'm around half-of-a-SB800-flash-gun lighter in cash now. When it got back to Nikon they revised the cost of the repair to just over £170. But it has taught me a valuable lesson ...

Just out of curiosity, what did you do to get it to melt? Were you overclocking it?

Green Hocker - I was at a fashion show and lets just say with the Quantum 2x2 on the SB-800 I could easily rattle off 30 plus frames per minute. The first I noticed anything wrong was a strange plastic burning smell - I thought that some of the lighting on the stage must be overheating. I actually caught the flash early enough for it not to actually burst into flames, but I'm real cautious now about how fast and hard I press the shutter when its got a strobe on the top.

My partner's Nikon SB-800 flashgun had a similar incident. Where did you get yours repaired in the end?
