Robin and I found ourselves wandering through a public market in Zanzibar Stone Town (Zanzibar Island, Tanzania). This guy sold us a little bag of spices to be mixed with rice and cooked to make a traditional dish (Zanzibar Pilau).
This is my attempt to re-create the mix (prepared for David as part of the 11 somethings exchange). It is cumin seeds, cloves, cardamom pods and cinnamon sticks.
The texture and aroma of this mix really symbolizes Zanzibar to me.
