Intel & StrongARM

Intel & StrongARM by splorp.
My rock-solid old school Newton MessagePad piled on top of a spanking new MacBook Pro. The Front Row is there as a size comparison. It was supplied my one of the friendly, black-clad lads at the massive Apple booth. You should have seen the look on his face when I pulled out the Newton for a snap.

websk8ter: I was getting around to it... really. I'm usually pretty good at adding images to my our groups, but other projects get in the way. It has been added now.

Whoa, did you get a MacBook Pro yet, or is this at the Apple Booth last week, at MacWorld Expo?

Nope. No 1.0 hardware for me - at least not yet. The next box I'm buying is prolly a Quad G5 - I still need to use Classic once in a blue moon, you know. As for a laptop... I'm quite happy using this cute little G3 iBook that a friend is loaning me indefinitely.

Nice shot Grant. I would have loved to see the looks on that guy's face. Speaking of the Newton and Apple Remote: Has anyone programmed the Newton to control Front Row? Why would anyone use a Newton instead of the Apple Remote?

Because you can ;-).

For those of you interested in reliving the Newton days but having luck finding one, there is an open source project with the Newton OS running on Linux-based PDAs. Here is a link:

Here is someone who got it running on the new Nokia 770:

@ bgav The look on the guy's face was priceless. I asked him in advance if he minded whether I took a few shots. When I pulled out the MP2100 he went a bit slack-jawed after recognizing the Apple logo. He said something like... "Oh yeah, one of those..."

As for controlling Front Row, it might be possible - but not without knowing the IR codes for the remote. It's feasible that the IR stack in the Newton may not be compatible with the device codes Apple is using for Front Row. Why would anyone use a Newton instead of a Front Row remote? Well for one, the Newton is one hell of a lot likely to get lost in the couch cushions.

@ idive2772 I was there when it was unveiled... did you see this shot?

Zaurus Booting Newton OS

It's also running on a PepperPad 2 and a SimPad device.
