Sony Walkman TPS-L2

    This is Sony’s first Walkman portable cassette player. Originally purchased in 1979 by a very good friend of mine, I inherited this slightly bruised device close to twenty years ago.

      Actually quite lovely, in its own way.

      Shit... I used to have one of these.

      @john Even though some dents are evident, these things were built like brick outhouses. I can’t even begin to estimate how many hundreds of hours worth of tape my friend ran through this deck. Although the headphones disintegrated years ago, I still have the blue leather wrap-around case as well.

      @crbassett Glad you like it.

      Too bad about the headphones. They were half the reason these things were so great. I never owned a Sony though. Just the bigger, heavier knock-offs.

      love the way this is photographed. The simplicity makes me appreciate it all the more...

      @somebody The headphones weren’t bad for the period, I suppose. I’ve never really liked the default headphones that Sony supplied with their decks … and I cannot use earbuds at all. I’m more of a full coverage Sennheiser kind of guy.

      @johnpaulthurlow Thanks. There’s no sense overcomplicating the process of documentation. A single source of soft, diffused light with a small reflector is brilliant in its simplicity.

      no more walkman
      antique now

      Not quite. According to this updated article over at Gizmodo, Sony is still proceeding to manufacture a single Walkman model for the United States market.
