Technology Retrospective

Technology Retrospective by splorp.
A selection of vintage entertainment and communication technology spotted at my parent’s garage sale this past summer. I will state right now that I did not take any of this home with me. Note the “Best of Wilf Carter’ album in demo mode.

phonographs that play 16s are a rare find indeed, these days!

she is beautiful, but good choice. sometimes it's ok to leave things behind. i once bought a "calculator" that weighed in at 12 kilos, just for the 6 letter typography on the side. after 4 house moves, i finally gave it away.

damn it was a nice asterisk though :D

Lovely things. I'm a pack rat and have a soft spot for record-players and typewriters, so I'd be urged to get all the stuff portrayed here, heh heh. The Symphonic portable player gets most of the attention, but I also like the other one on the left, the one half hidden by the album.

didn't your folks have a brief stint as hip-hop stars???

yeah, yeah, it was them.
who could forget that line from their hit "Where's It At?":

"I got three turntables and a type-writ-er..."

@ atomicity I completely forgot that turntable played at 16 rpm. My sister and I used to spend hours in front of this box, listening to my dad’s albums and 78s ... The Kingston Trio, The Limelighters, Roger Miller, Herb Alpert, Mathis, Cash ... and later on, K-Tel’s jukebox hits of the 50’s. None of those discs were 16 rpm, mind you.

@ yeled You wouldn’t believe that stuff I’ve passed on. Or maybe you would. It’s hard, really hard sometimes. A few years ago, I would have carted all of this gear home with me. Speaking of heavy, you should see the remains of the PDP 8/M mini-mainframe I have in the garage.

@ gary Wilf, is safely stored away in one of three file boxes full of discs that I did happen to cart back home. Still working on shooting the covers for the Retro Records group.

@ cary I wrote many a college paper on that Olympia (not to mention typing out my entire record collection list prior to being able to afford a printer for my Apple II.

@ riccardo I picked up the smaller turntable at another garage sale specifically so my dad could transfer his 78s to cassette. The old Symphonic turntable was tube-powered and self-contained with no line out. That cute little job connected directly into any amp. Beautiful solution when it worked.

@ k’vitsh Should have grabbed it when you could, cuz.

Wilf Carter. Wow. That is so awesome!

I saw this on Explore's "last 7 days," but I knew you were from Calgary before I saw the tags.

Interesting thing, I just googled him, and discovered that he died ten years ago, yesterday (Dec 5). Also, he was inspired by a touring Swiss yodeler.

Hope he's resting well!

I wish I had tickets to come buy the Mac Luggable (or Mac Anchor as I like to call it). Does the portable have a backlight? My current one doesn‘t, sadly enough.
