Corner Office

This is the southeast corner of the building, so technically I do have a corner office. No cubicle walls, thank goodness.
Apple iSight... the infamous grantcam.
The iSight sits on the remains of an articulated Ikea desk lamp that I salvaged from a previous place of employ. Remember kids, never throw out anything.
Japanese ceramic bulldog sculpture rescued from a church garage sale. Given the name Donald S. Resnick PhD, in honour of a past business acquaintance.
Lensbaby 2.0, courtesy of Gravity Bun.
My sweety.
High-test home brew.
My main work box, a 1.8Ghz single processor G5... I'm pretty sure this is the slowest G5 tower in the office. I'm gunning for an upgrade.
80GB La Cie FireWire drive which holds my entire iTunes library.
Blue & white Power Macintosh G3, upgraded with a 500Mhz G4 processor card. This is my OS 9 box, used for browser and font compatibility testing.
The POS Dell which I need to run the veer.com development environment. Feh.
Apple Mighty Mouse.
Extra toothbrush (unopened).
Chopsticks (opened and exposed to the elements).
/dev/mug coffee cup from Thinkgeek.
Power adapter cord for borrowed G3 iBook (not shown).
Perusing Flickr contacts.
Photoshopping updated typeface displays.
Rat’s nest.
Facing east, 14th Street northwest runs past the building.
First generation 22" Apple Cinema Display, the same one I have at home. Fingers crossed, it hasn't shown any signs of backlight fade or colour shift.
Keyboard for Windows box. Currently sitting connected, but unused because I access the POS Dell via Remote Desktop Client on my Mac.
Other Veer-based Flickr’ers Slowtron and uberllama sit over this way.
Samsung SyncMaster 173T dual input flatscreen monitor. Switches between the POS Dell and the blue & white G3.
Veer desktop wallpaper featuring the fabulous Nicholas typeface by Nick Shinn.
Ooooooooo.
An Olfa self-healing cutting mat. My mousepad of choice. See my other desk.
Keyboard and mouse for the blue & white. Yes, I know I should use a KVM...
My Sennheiser HD212 Pro headphones. More about these cans here.
iTunes, natch. Currently playing The Coconut Monkeyrocket and Martinibomb. Really.
Double CD UK import featuring the seminal R.E.M. albums Document and Life’s Rich Pagent. Also featuring dumb-ass copy control safeguards.
BootCamp baby yeeah!
Need to request me an Duo Core Mac before I can show up for camp, Dave...
Guinness book record holder for most apps open at any one time.
And don't forgot about my 'most items stuffed into a Dock' award.
Demo Only. Not For Resale. This is am early 90s packaging sticker leftover from my Image Club days.
The to do list from hell.
Hi-liters®, Sharpies®, and pens... oh my.
One case of Girl Guide Cookies, nine boxes remaining. These are the chocolate and vanilla sandwich variations. Yum.
Book shelf, typeface project piles, miscellaneous crap storage, and a dead Duo Dock sit off to the right.
Just wait... I'll be posting some Lensbabied architectural loveliness very soon.
Have I ever mentioned how much I hate phones?
Self adhesive aluminum Veer logo stickers. Used for labeling equipment, press kit folders, and other brandable paraphernalia.
Vintage EyeWire stickers.
Corner Office by splorp.
With a tip of the noggin’ topper towards uberllama and ladyllama, here's a slice of my workaday world at Veer headquarters.

{ Kara } : Happy to share some tips. I gave Yuvie a few pointers yesterday. The trick is to expose for the areas that contain a light grey to medium grey equivalent, not the highlights. In this example, I used center-weighted metering and grabbed the exposure for the area just below the keyboard.

{ Mat } : All I needed was a kick in the pants from the llama folks. Plus, I get to add this to the Veer pool.

{ artery.e } : Do it. I think there's a couple groups for this sort of thing... like Desknotes for example.

re: cameras - i keep thinking that my camera isn't performing as well as it should be. it's a great canon, but i think i've set the default controls to a different number and am not sure what setting is good for most situations.

I usually have mine set to aperture priority, rather than full program mode - simply because I want to be able to the relationship between exposure and the shutter speed. A lot of it is trial and error, but since starting to use an SLR again, the tricks of the trade from my professional photography background keep popping back into my head.

{ Are You Generic? } : Thanks. And today I'm wearing my </branding> tee. I love that stuff, even though I work at a place that does a crapload of direct marketing. The statement on the shirt is antithetical to what we do at Veer. Hopefully, that doesn't make out to be too much me a hypocrite.

{ Arif } : Anytime. I originally found Coconut Monkeybomb through Archive.org’s Netlabels site... they also have some stuff over at Oddio Overplay.

{ Joe } : You can't be too careful.

They're in the garage, the front hall closet, under my workbench in the basement, and of course... in the trunk of my car. I usually have an extra pair a Chucks under the desk when the weather is leaning more towards winter suckiness, and I have to change out of my Sorels™.

So...what do you see through those fancy white blinds?

splorp  Pro User  says:

Hmmm... “fancy blinds” is sort of an oxymoron isn’t it? Oh, and they're actually aluminum flavour, not white... not that is makes a difference as to what lay beyond. This window faces east, so I have a reasonably decent view of Kensington Road from 14th street. Occasionally, I'll be lucky enough to take in a spectacular sunrise. The infamous Chicken on the Way is across the intersection from us, just southeast of the office.

Consider Synergy instead of a KVM. It's like a virtual KVM via the network. I've used it regularly between OSX, XP, and Debian.

Synergy would work for me, except that the Mac that requires the extra keyboard and mouse runs OS 9, not OS X. And the nice thing about running Remote Desktop to connect to the Windows box is that t he session uses the full resolution of my 22" Cinema Display. Otherwise, I'd have to run Windows on the smaller Samsung. Good idea though... I'll be able to use Synergy at home for sure.

Hmmm... I’ll have to ask the facilities folks about that. I’m pretty sure it’s a local (Calgary) supplier, but I’ll check for you.

I'm not sure how you go about viewing a catalog or ordering from them, but the supplier is Corporate Express. Looks like your standard international office supply conglomerate. I'll keep looking to see if I can determine whether the desks are manufactured by a third party company.

Sadly, this is no longer where my workspace is located. I’m stuck in the middle of the office now, several desks away from a window - in any direction. New picture soon.
