Departure Carpet

Waiting at the gate before heading off to Maui. Can someone explain why the carpeting in most airport waiting areas is so damn ugly? Do they get end of roll discounts or something? Gah.

Strangely enough, it appears to go with every other colour in the image... except perhaps the canary yellow pullover in the upper right-hand corner.
