This momma squirrel may be pregnant or nursing young.
I watched as she nibbled on the piece of bread for awhile then stashed the remainder away in a hole for later.

I'm thinking maybe she hasn't popped the pups yet, since once the babies start suckling, her poor nips will look red and a bit sore for some time.
