The enormous bill of the Northern Shoveler makes species identification a cinch. These brilliantly colored birds are common winter visitors to the Lower Rio Grande Valley and always a treat to photograph. This male hasn't quite molted into his full breeding plumage yet but before too long his bright green head will be a truly stunning sight along our wetlands.
