Pu`u Hau Kea -- Massive Cinder Cone ~ Island of Hawaii

Pu`u Hau Kea -- Massive Cinder Cone ~ Island of Hawaii by SparkyLeigh.
At 13,460 feet (some have corrected that to 13,460 ft), a few hundred feet lower in elevation than Mauna Kea's summit on Pu`u Wekiu (above and behind me -- we are facing south), this huge cinder cone is on of the favorites of snowboarders when it has this much snow. A larger image here

You can see the curved tracks running down its face.
The boarders must laboriously climb up the cones face to its rim before taking the fast ride back down on their boards. I will post more of those photos soon.

This photo is also a part of Short interview with Forest Murphy – Hawaii Snowboarder

No, I will not get back to plam trees for awhile. To have snow in the tropics is very rare and unique, both to the locals and visitors ;)

See the previous & following vignettes and you will learn how special, and different, Hawaii's high volcanoes are...

I had no idea you had snow in Hawaii. Learn something new everyday.
