Lucky you, you're about to have a lot of fun... Here's what I know:

- tape the back on each and every time you load film... inevitably, the back will fall off and ruin your film
- forget all the rules you know, really all you need to remember is to focus, or not focus
- try cross processing the film you shoot
- shoot 35 mm through it using foam, tape and rubber bands
- b is for bulb and long exposures are your friend... using this setting keeps the shutter open as long as you depress the shutter release
- try to find old, expired film and see what happens
- this book is inspirational and has tons of ideas
- get creative, there's no wrong way to use the holga

Hope this helps...

it does help. thanks. two more things though...how many clicks do i turn it to advance one frame of 120 film? and i'm a little confused on the whole shutter speed thing on this camera. how do i know i'm getting a correct or nearly correct exposure?

The Holga 120FN has only one shutter speed, around 1/100th of a second, otherwise it's bulb. It has two aperture settings, around f/8 (cloud symbol) and f/11 (sun symbol). To determine your exposure, you'd have to use a hand held light meter or the sunny 16 rule. If there's light available outdoors, you're usually good, and indoors or low light you'll have to either create light, use faster film or fire up the flash.

BUT... remember, forget everything you know. :)

The clicks-to-next-frame will depend on the mask you installed, 6x6 (12 exp per roll) or 6x4.5 (16 exp). There should be a little red window on the back of the camera that will slowly count you down between frames. Large dot, medium dot, small dot, stop! The frame # will be displayed in the window.

If you don't have the red window for some reason, when I shoot 35mm with the 6x6 mask is around 34 clicks. I usually write that on the tape with a marker in case I forget. I'm not sure if that's the same for 120 roll film though.

Very cool. Glad to be of help. My Holga is sitting on my desk right now. It's staring at me and it looks lonely. Maybe I should put it to work again soon....
