Water Spout

Water Spout by Spam for Sam.
Took this picture today from my apartment. Looking out from souuth eastern shore of Singapore towards Batam, Indonesia. We thought it was a tornado at first and then later learnt from the local news that is was a Water Spout - a condition wherby a cloud 'sucks up' water from the ocean into a vortex. It is harmless to shipping apparantly.

No manipulation at all other than using 'auto contrast' and 'auto colour' in Picasa.

Blimey. It does have a slight surreal look so I can see why people above are questioning the authenticity, but even if it was, it's done pretty darn well.

Very cool shot! Water spouts are nitorious throughout history as extreme dangers to ships and man - but aren't as dangerous as tornados.

It is no fake. There is a lot of video of it floating around too. It cause no damage to shipping, but there is video of it turning a very large ship around!

Excellent capture! It amazes me what one can shoot from your own home. See my latest for another example, although not as impressive as yours.

I saw something very similar in the Philippines. I presumed it was a Tornado though. I saw a video of one also in Singapore (was it the same one?) and it was spinning a pretty big ship around - You can get to it through the stormchasers pool.

Awesome! I saw this same spout from work but didn't have my camera! Your pictures are by far the best I've found of this particular spout. You caught it in the very early stage when it was strongest. Thanks for sharing!

Wonderful, the inclusion of the ships gives it a sense of perspective. That's one huge spout!

Stunning to behold, the scale is impressive and you caught it at a perfect time between the ships. The sky is clear enuff to see the land behind as well, really effective and really great to look at and ponder.

Nice!!!!

A water spout is a tornado except in the water. If that thing were to move onto the beach, you would call it a tornado, but it's the same beast.

Do you have any interest in getting this image published in a magazine? One of my authors who is doing an article for my publication, Weatherwise Magazine, sent me the link to your photo. I'd love to include it in the piece if you're interested. Please email me at mbenner@heldref.org.
