Excellent. What sort of camera do you use?

  4. tricky (rick harrison) (99 months ago | reply)

Ta! it's one of my favourites. i took it a couple of years ago with a basic pentax mz-m manual slr camera (and tripod :-) and used a film scanner; recently bought a (very nice) minolta dimage a2 though.

That is a great picture. Were you standing on a pedestrian bridge or something?

Also what speed and f/stop did you use?

  9. tricky (rick harrison) (96 months ago | reply)

    thanks everyone!
kfergos: yes, i was standing on a pedestrain bridge that goes over the motorway. It was taken several years ago, i can remember i held the shutter open on bulb with a cable release & tripod for about 30 seconds (i think), and i suspect i just set it to the highest f/stop on the camera

Great night shot indeed, I think the division and markings increase the effect.

ta for that, that's really cool!. i've left a comment on your blog btw, worth repeating some on it here - the latest issue of "Digital Camera Magazine" published by Future Publishing in the UK has a feature on night time photography. has loads of tips, the best one being to try taking long exposures a few minutes after the sun has set when its virtually night time, but just not quite.

If you take pictures in the direction of the sunset then, the long exposure gives the sky a really rich dark blue colour, while still giving you all the light effects from cars etc.

Also, in the UK now is the perfect time to be taking such shots, as the leaving-work rush-hour coincides with the sunset. actually, given the clocks have just gone forward an hour for daylight savings, maybe it's slightly too late?

great camera...yes digital is sweet but sometimes nothing beats a manual 35mm camera.

Good info on the nite shooting too. LOL, I could stand for a week on my gravel road and not get one vehicle driving by.

  33. Kenny Muir (86 months ago | reply)

This is great - did you use a neutral density filter?

  34. tricky (rick harrison) (86 months ago | reply)

@krmuir - thanks, ND filter - no, this was just a straight 30 second exposure on film, with a tweak to the curves in photoshop to give it a cross-processed-colour look.

thanks for all the other comments too!
