Culture Vulture Exhibition Preview Evening @ The Hepworth Gallery, Wakefield

Culture Vulture Exhibition Preview Evening @ The Hepworth Gallery, Wakefield

Photos from the preview evening of The Hepworth Gallerys' spring programme, for arts and sculpture interested bloggers. (Note the tour took place while exhibits were still being installed - so some photos may include equipment, floor protection etc).

Arranged in partnership with The Culture Vulture & Creative Tourist

This is the room containing work by Heather and Ivan Morison - a collection of objects, performance and puppetry, drawn on the life and work of British novelist Anna Kavan. There is a narrated soundtrack of 3 voices, emanating from the glowing helium-filled balloon at one side of the room, and marionettes manipulated by gallery staff - quite looking forward to seeing this one properly when the exhibition starts!

The Hepworth is in the running for the Art Fund prize 2012 for museums and galleries - why not give them a vote - the money would make a world of difference in these austere times! (Tho i'm slightly torn - being a computer programmer i'm drawn towards Bletchly Park also :-s )

This is a portrait of one of the Artists - Ben Rivers - the gallery is showing his award-winning post-apocalyptic science-fiction film 'slow motion'.
One of the spaces within the gallery has been quite extensively blacked out, and a small sound-proofed projection booth installed to display the film.

Unfortunate timing meant we arrived in the room just as the film was finishing, so no photo showing off a still from the film - looked interesting so we'll be returning to see it properly - it runs on the hour for 45 minutes throughout the day.
While the film was being re-loaded on the projector I noticed some nice light being reflected through the projection room glass, so asked Ben if he'd mind posing for a photo - quite happy with the result :-)

This is the room containing work by David Thorpe, presented for the first time in Europe.
The sculptures and paintings explore his interest in ancient craftsmanship and labour-intensive artisan techniques - everything is hand-crafted, and all the leaf motifs are largely non-repeating.

Installation in The Hepworth's entrance by the local Neon Workshops. "No More I Love Yours" was a series of monthly neon statements around love, visible from the east coast main line as you approached wakefield train station. The series ends this valentines day, where the un-sold remaining statements will be auctioned off. Love neon - i'm quite tempted to do one of their workshops :-)
