Nice day for a walk by tricky ™

Nice day for a walk

A couple walking around Ladybower Reservoir (in the Peak District National Park) on a cold winters day - the snow has been melting for a day or two, so its mostly gone on the hillsides that are being licked by the sun, but still trecherously icey on the side in shade
I was walking on the road to fairholmes visitors centre for this shot and there was a thick layer of ice on the footpath and black-ice patches on the road - made for fun driving home again!

In the bleak midwinter... by tricky ™

In the bleak midwinter...

....beauty still abounds.

This is a view of Ladybower Reservoir in the peak district national park on a still and wintery day. A lot of the snow of the recent week(s) has melted, but it's still very icey, especially on the road by the waters edge on the left hand side of the lake (you can make out a red van and a couple of cars if you look closely).

I think it's here that the village of Ashopton used to exist - one of 2 villages that were abandoned and flooded to create Ladybower reservoir in the 1930s-1940s - for many years the church spire used to appear in the lake when the water was low, until they demolished it as people kept swimming out to it!

Derwent Reservoir dam wall, Peak District National Park, Derbyshire by tricky ™

Derwent Reservoir dam wall, Peak District National Park, Derbyshire

Water cascading over the top of Derwent Reservoir in the peak district national park, with people included to give an impression of scale.

This place blows me away every time, such an impressive piece of engineering - the top of the dam is perfectly level (before the days of laser levels and computer-aided-design), such that when theres been a lot of rain, you get a beautiful cascade of water overflowing the top. Stunning to see (and to hear!)

Derwent Reservoir dam wall, Peak District National Park, Derbyshire

The dam wall of Derwent Reservoir in the Peak District National Park, Derbyshire. This is the dam where the "bouncing bombs" of Dambusters fame were tested. The dam is an engineering marvel - the entire top of the dam wall is perfectly level, such that when theres been a lot of rain and the dam is full, the water overflows over the top of the dam creating a beautiful waterfall - stunning to see (and hear!)
