Apple Newton MessagePad Collection - #1a
NOTE: Repairs - you can contact me or Frank. But understand that he is located in Germany, but he's the one I go
to if I can't get it working. There are others you can get a hold of
on NTLK if needed. Unfortunately we no longer have Dr. Newton - Dave
Watson to call upon.
If you're interested in a Newton you can check with me or eBay.
*NOTE: Please be aware that these Newtons in the back are what's left of two bulk purchases of broken Newtons which I had to repair to get them working. They are in my collection BUT SEEKING LOVING HOMES!
I purchased my first Newton MP100 back in 1996 for $169 plus shipping. At the time I purchased also the Newton Enhancement Kit which included a Newton Bag and several software titles.
I eventually purchased two MP2000's off a Newton For Sale Website (I forget the name of at this time). One of the units was purchased from Owen Lock who at the time was a VP at The Ballantine Publishing Group a subsidiary of Random House, Inc. These two units were later upgraded to an MP2100 prior to the end of the Official Apple Upgrade Program - definitely worth the price.
I actually took my MP2000u to Taiwan, Hong Kong, London and Italy. While in Italy I visited the Murano Glass Factory in Venice. I was approached by an employee who indicated he was speaking on behalf of the Owner's son. The son offered to trade a piece of Murano Glass Artwork probably valued at $2000 - $3000 USD. I seriously considered this, but declined because we had a cat and was worried he would knock it down. (Man I wish I had taken the offer. At least I would have had something to remember it by instead of just this recounting of events.)
After the Newton Platform was cancelled - I saw an ad for a company situated in Boston, MA who wanted New or Nearly New MP2100's - They were trying to amass as many Newtons as possible because after Apple cancelled the Newton the 50,000 remaing Newtons were quickly snatched up and they sorely needed them for their project. They offered $1000 for a prinstine MP2100 base unit. I quickly sold my two units which earned me $1900 ($1000 for one unit & $900 for the other unit). I thought it was a good deal at the time as I only spent around $1200 for both MP2000u's with many accessories, software and other stuff. In the end I made some additional money selling most of the remaing stuff. Though I did keep my original MP100 and any remaining accessories.
20070119 - UPDATE: Hm! I found a photocopy of a check I received for the sum of $2. It was because my payment of $1900 was short $2 for some odd reason. I contact the company and they sent this check to me. I'm going to see if I can contact the company first before posting a scan of the check. It does have a bank account number and I want to make sure it's closed already. I assume it should be since it was a special purpose account and that project is long dead now...
20070122 - UPDATE #2: It looks like my Newton was headed for the Petrosains Project. The account title indicates ANWAY & COMPANY, sub-title: PETROSAINS PROJECT ACCOUNT... hm, is there a way to get my original Newtons back!?
When I finally returned to 'The Way' - like the way ward son in the Bible - my first purchase was for (7 or 8) MP2000's off eBay from GEM Enterprises, Inc.. Later on I purchased a few large lots of mixed condition Newtons which consisted of MP2000, MP2000u and MP2100 units. Some were broken (cracked Touch Screens, LCDs and cases) while others were fully functional. Because of this I began doing repairs and upgrades - I'm a tinkerer at heart... one of my TV Idols is MacGyver.
One intersting fact about the later batches of Newtons I purchased from an eBay Seller was that they were the units being used by RTI.
NOTE: (A representative from RTI contacted Newtontalk (NTLK) sort of testing the waters to see what the market condition was. Well some did buy lots from them and eventually they started to appear on eBay. The relative price of Newtons at that point started to drop and people were able to get decent prices for a Newton.)
In my two large lots which I purchased off eBay I discovered after salvaging a few units that when I powered them up that they had software that were used for Drug Surveys for NHSDA handled by RTI. In my contact with RTI peviously I made a friend there whom I contacted about this discovery. She stated that those who purchased their broken Stock were suppose to by contract wipe out the units prior to their sale... Too bad no one informed anybody that the Newton doesn't lose data that easily ;-)
BTW - I read my Bible on my Newton using David Fedor's - The Message/ with the KJV, RSV and NIV versions of the Bible. The NIV for a short time was licensed from Zondervan by David. This application eventually was translated by him to the Palm OS as Scripture which is currently being sold through contact by Laridian as My Bible - It's also available for the Apple iPod! ;-)
