      Dogs were the first animal to be domesticated by humans about 17,000 years ago. That special relationship is the result of thousands of years of husbandry. Humans and animals don't have a rapport - only humans and domesticated animals do. Dogs are very useful but they are freaks of nature in the same way that milk cows with huge udders are freaks of nature. I'm not insulting dogs - I just want to emphasize that the staggering diversity of dog breeds today and their attitudes towards us is present because of human guidance and that's not a bad thing.
