Strange iPhone camera reaction to a spinning propeller

Weird effect, might be the video sync or frequency of operation...

(I think) It's because a phone camera doesn't have a shutter. The sensor is scanned as fast as it can be but that's presumably slower than the propeller is spinning. With a DSLR the shutter prevents this sort of effect. Taking video of the propeller produces another interesting effect.
