... Yes, all the money given to Africa at the last minute, to fight AIDS, but when you check it out you discover that no money was given to prevent it.

I just watched a video about a company in SoCal that does what they call "Trash-Out" repossessed homes on the coast. Sad. Ann was outraged. She sees all the empty building sitting around here and can't understand why they are not in some kind of use. Instead we are just feeding the landfill with people's lives.

Yup.. we've seen one of those crews in action. The houses they usually work on have been trashed by the occupants because they are so angry at losing the place. Some lost because of bad luck like lost jobs or illness, some because of poor planning, because they didn't understand the loan they were getting, and some because of both bad luck and planning.

You will need to get out a map for what I'm about to say:
I have a very good friend who has an adjustable rate on a new house, and that will reset in two years so that is when she was planning to refinance for a fixed rate. Right now she's upside down on her mortgage and she's praying that values start climbing again in her area, but I'm pretty sure it won't happen. She lives way out in the high desert in Rosamund (kind of near Edwards AFB) where people bought because they couldn't afford to buy in LA or even in Lancaster. Lots of new tracts all over the place Her husband works in China Lake, a long distance the other direction but the only decent housing unless they wanted to live in Ridgecrest. I don't know of many people who want to live there.
Well, some of those developments went bankrupt before they were finished and the default rate on the others is pretty high so she's surrounded by new houses that have been owned by people but are now boarded up. The inventory of bank owned properties is so high I don't know if the values will recover in the next 5 years, or maybe longer.

I got it. It is wrong. Who wins? Like deep throat is reported to have said, "Follow the money."

Well, someone is sitting on a big fat pile of cash in an offshore account. I'm guessing the banks that got the bailout money and then sat on that have also stashed it somewhere like that. I've heard that the director of "Wall Street" has had people come up to him and tell him how much they admired the Gordon Gecko character, at which point he asks them if they didn't understand the movie at all.

You know that cabin we just bought? It was not bank owned, the owner had not defaulted, but the price was a bit lower than it might have been in a normal market.

Before that we looked at a bunch of ones that were bank owned and made offers on two distressed properties. In one, the kitchen had been torn out by the owner and left outside. He cut it up with a skilsaw or something similar. To bring it up to basic health code the clean-up crew had hauled the part of the cabinet with the sink back inside and hooked it up, and found a replacement stove someplace and hooked that up. The one from the cabin had been thrown down the hill beside the house. Someone else made an offer that was accepted half an hour before we made ours.

The other owner hadn't quite defaulted yet; it was a short sale and the bank never responded to our offer. They will not get as much as we offered because the market is busted for that area.

Well I ranted on for several paragraphs about this but I will spare you. We don’t understand the waste or the lack of foresight or the horrendous greed. We are from a different generation in a different locale with different conditions. We see alternatives around us here, but we realize there is a different mind-set and social climate in that geographical location. What we see here may not apply there.

And in addition, our part of the country traditionally lags behind the norm (in practically everything) 6 to 8 months. The total impact of the greed has not hit us here yet. It will. When the west coast is beginning to recover, we will be in the depths of it. Maybe then we will understand some. Maybe we never will.

As you know I am reluctant to discuss politics (or religion) because it is pointless to do so and nearly always results in animosity. And I don’t want any of my uneducated comments to cause the kind of vitriol that Fotoedge got with a photo posted in that stream. Flickr is about photography after all and not politics. Some of the comments had to be deleted I think.

As an old friend of mine used to say: The winners gloat and the losers say “Shut up and deal.”

You are a wise man.

Fred, I thought you were not that much older than I am. I'll be 59 in two weeks. I thought you were mid-60s.

In three weeks I will be 73.

Annie holds all the aces on miserable experience. She was a child on the east coast of England during the years of bombing. This depression stuff is peanuts.
