day 239: the 3 hour stomach flu? or an incredible unedible egg? II.

i never noticed how insane the gerber baby is looking these days.
perhaps not surprisingly, the pediatrician didn't think it was very likely that
odin was having a life threatening allergic reaction to
an egg . no, he thought it was much more likely that he had a case of mild stomach flu and recommened that after odin had stopped vomiting for an hour to start giving him 15 CCs of electrolytes every 15 minutes. if he made it for four hours without an incident, then he could start nursing again. of course, i was relieved to know that i wouldn't have to test my
infant cpr skills.
after we started giving him small amounts of
gerber liquilytes , odin quickly began acting as if nothing had happened, which is actually a little unsettling because i would think that the effects of stomach flu would last a longer than 3 or 4 hours.
as an interesting aside, it became clear to us that odin
loved the
liquilytes . i was suprised to see that both it and
pedialyte contain
sucralose . i'm not saying i think it's provably unsafe, but it still seems wierd to put a n artifical sweetener untested on infants in a product that's meant to be given to sick kids.

I'm surprised your doc thought it was the
stomach flu. Did he have a fever, chills or
any other symptoms? I would guess it was the
egg, especially since he felt better once he
completely emptied the contents of his
stomach and had a bit of electrolytes to
flush him out. Well, either way, you pretty
much treat a stomach flu the same as food
poisoning.

Oh, and about the sucralose electrolyte;
There are a couple brands that contain a rice
syrup instead, but sometimes they come with
artificial flavor. Sugar, in the form of
sucrose, fructose or dextrose is something
that can make dehydrations worse.

But, moms will tell you that breastmilk is
okay for rehydration and that pedialyte was
made especially for formula babies blogs.salon.com/0002504/2004/12/13.html

no, he didn't have any of the other
symptoms of stomach flu, but the doctor
didn't think that was too unusual given the
cases that they have been seeing in his
office; he didn't think the symptoms were
what you'd see with salmonella poisoning, which usually takes 12-72 hours
for symptoms to appears and lasts for much
longer than a couple of hours.

My son was disgusted when he saw that
Pediatlyte had aspartame in it, so they did
not give that to the baby. Also, their
pediatrician prescribed Singulair for their 2
yr old, (for asthma)and I found that it also
had aspartame in it, so they didn't give it
to him; and you know, he never really needed
it... he outgrew the asthma and hasn't had
one episode of it this winter. If you look up
sucralose,its made with chlorine. Ugh.
Parents just have to read labels very closely
because apparently the drs. dont have time to
do so.

I wasn't thinking salmonella, more like just
rejecting something rich or bad, like when
Adam got a hold of a day-old sippy cup of
milk that had rolled under the sofa. Vomiting
was pretty much within a couple hours, and
didn't stop until he had completely emptied
his stomach. Blech!! But, after he got rid of
it, he was all better.
One thing for sure, you get a stronger
stomach once you're a parent.

we have an rsv shot on thursday so i'll get
a chance to ask him if he's a pedialyte
pusher :-) i'm wondering if the differences
in advice are related to the risk of severe
dehydration ( vomiting once a day versus 8
times in an hour ). e.g. some guidelines recommend nursing for mild cases but urge
supplementing electrolytes in moderate to
severe cases. then again, even though the
doctor is in favor of nursing and knows that
odin is nursing full time, maybe they just
"forget" and give the standard, cookie cutter
advice.

I don't think the advice was necessarily bad.
If he was dry heaving, he may have not really
felt like latching onto mom. But, in the same
respect, what I learned from my days with a
reflux baby, vomiting is not really a sign of
dehydration. A baby can upchuck a lot and the
body still retains water. The diaper is the
best indicator - fewer wet diapers or dark
yellow diapers are warning signs for sure.

ahhh, nice to know you don't think we
poisoned him with undercooked egg :-) the
egg itself wasn't smelly or rotten so it's
fairly easy to rule out spoilage in that
sense of "bad". and he's been eating enough
eggs over the past two weeks so that we can
probably rule out inability to tolerate eggs.
he did, however, eat more egg than he ever
had previously, so maybe the little bit extra
just threw him over the edge? it was only
about two teaspoons total, so i'd be
surprised if that were the case.
regardless, despite the doctor's suspicion
that it was stomach flu, we'll be
conservative and cut out the eggs for awhile
just to be safe.
