day 121: i voted!

day 121: i voted! by snowdeal.
well, i always vote, but it still it felt extra special today.

there were long lines at the voting location all day long. and our precinct is notorious for being a ghost town even during presidential elections.

there were several people milling around who were helping first-timers through the voting process and apparently one man had been there all day long while they tried to get him a provisional ballot.

the woman standing in front of front of us had some issues because her name was crossed off the list as having already voted earlier in the day, but for some reason they let her vote again. a girl standing next to us claimed that she had seen it happen twice just while she was standing in line.

vote early and vote often :-)

The young guy in front of me did not have any way to identify himself except for a voter registration card. He looked younger than 18 to me. They allowed him to vote provisionally because his mother was with him. I waited 2 1/2 hours with a 2 year old. I deserved a gold sticker ;)

well she did swear that really, really, really hadn't been there earlier in the day.

it seemed that it was a requirement for the people crossing names off the list to be over 80 years of age and somewhat easily confused, so it wouldn't have surprised me that they incorrectly crossed a few names off the list. at least there weren't any "hanging chads" :-)

LOL!! The people at our precinct seemed to be of the senior persuasion as well. When I showed the lady my driver's license, she said "please state your name and address" WTH? It's right there on my licence! Then she thumbed through the "Ro" pages, and I saw my name and she went past the page twice! No wonder I waited in line 2 1/2 hours. Anyway, it appears that my trouble was all in vain. Maybe I need to move to a swing state so I at least have a chance to sway the results. :( Okay, I better get off my vent before I offend anyone, but I am not happy with how my state voted. Just think, when Odin is 4, he can go and vote for president too!

I worked in my local precint, and somewhat amazingly, I'm not 80. (Of course, everyone else I worked with was).

I can't speak for Maine (or anywhere else), but in my county (Santa Clara, CA) the sheet where your name and address is crossed off is not official. It's called a Street Index, and should list all registered voters in the precint, along with their party affiliation. That sheet is posted by the door so people can look at who in the neighborhood has voted, and then do what they like with that information. (Most likely call people who haven't voted and coerce...err..remind them to vote). Since it's not official, it's not that big of a deal if someone is already crossed off the list, chances are someone just got confused, or lazy.

The offical role is the one where you sign off your name and print your address. Obviously if there's already a signature next to your name, you shouldn't get to vote again.

We weren't allowed to ask for ID unless the official role specicifically stated to do so. (Typically for newly registered voters to prevent registration fraud). Most people, however, would hand over their ID without being asked.

ah! thanks for the explanation. not that i thought there was a grand conspiracy amongst the gray hairs, but still it was a bit disconcerting to see that multiple people were already crossed off the list.
