Well, in the sense that all the processing steps before the contrast boost are intended to be at least crude approximations of real physical processes (e.g. the material used is a "cook-torrance" model, which is based on a statistical model of certain types of physical surfaces); the source of light is an HDR image of a real location, which nominally (though who knows in reality) has a linear relationship with the actual light levels there.

The contrast adjustment step, on the other hand, is just an arbitrary curve based on what looks cool...

[Of course photography is rife with such arbitrary transformations... :-]

The renderer tries to be unbiased, but of course, given bugs, who knows...

As for releasing, who knows; we all have dreams, but basically it's for fun. Honestly speaking, the only thing I can offer that existing renderers don't do much better and faster is lots of crappy code! :-)
