I think this might be a playful "challenge" of sorts... most cats will turn sideways (larger visual footprint) and hop/skip towards you on their toes, before scurrying off. As for waiting for the lack of direct eye contact, such things are considered aggressive while looking away is being friendly.

Tossing a paper ball in their direction can keep them busy for minutes, too.

HI EVERYBODY!! Sage is a friendly cat and yes she wants to be a person pretty badly and it makes her sad sometimes. But at night her pupils dilate COMPLETELY and she RUNS AROUND THE HOUSE and BEEPS AND HONKS and I'm not sure this anthropomorphic reasoning really applies at those moments.

It's called catnip!!! HAHA I don't know that for sure, but it sounded good. My cat does all kinds of weird anomalous things like this also. Since my cat and I both are nocturnal, I get to see her while she is at her peak of the 'day'. Mine tends to gallop like a horse with her tail in the air and back hunched, and at 12 pounds, is very close to sounding like one too.

I suspect she is trying to goad you into playing. (wrestling) Turn around and say 'boo' and see if she jumps about two miles high. :) Mine will actually backflip trying to 'evade the attack'.
