Ya Kun french toast kaya set, with soft boiled eggs and tea

Ya Kun french toast kaya set, with soft boiled eggs and tea

The origins of Ka Yun goes back as far as 1926 when founder Loi Ah Koon started out as an assistant in a Hainanese coffeestall before setting up a coffeestall business at Telok Ayer Basin. Subsequent moves were to the Lau Pau Sat and finally to the Far East Square. The Ka Yun brand and franchise is now managed by his children.

Super Panoramic view ... from an auspicious Block 88, with a forthcoming inauspicious fate

Super Panoramic view ... from an auspicious Block 88, with a forthcoming inauspicious fate

From the 16th floor of a HDB housing block that is soon to be demolished. Breathtaking the view may be, the block is hardly a slum but as things goes, its to make way probably for a twice as high newer block. Being labelled with an auspiciously numbered block number will not save it from the inauspicious fate of demolition soon.

Looking out from Singapore's earliest surviving air raid shelter

Looking out from Singapore's earliest surviving air raid shelter

Located at Tiong Bahru, the shelter has been opened to the public to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the battle for and eventual fall of Singapore during World War II.. The 1940s civilian air raid shelter at Block 78 Guan Chuan Street was constructed by the then-Singapore Improvement Trust. The 1,500 sq m space was purpose-built to shelter about 100 people from the neighbourhood during the Japanese air raids between December 1941 and January 1942, shortly before Singapore fell during World War II. It was the only air raid shelter to have been incorporated into public housing at the time. Asides from the organized tours, the project includes an exhibition of photographs, oral accounts and material gleaned from Britain's Imperial War Museum. The exhibits serve to tell the history of pre-war and war-time air raid shelters in Singapore.

Flyer, Bonding with Gaya Street (For the record, to remember Gaya Street ! )

Flyer, Bonding with Gaya Street (For the record, to remember Gaya Street ! )

Bonding With Gaya Street (BGWS) is a community heritage exhibition co-organized by the North Borneo History Enthusiasts and Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu.

When it came to North Borneo's almost obscure history, there are too many things to talk about. Hence, Gaya Street as a focal and starting point. Think of Kota Kinabalu as an atom and Gaya Street being its nucleus. Even in the old days, Jesselton's evolution to what it is today started with Bond Street and its first row of 17 shophouses.
