Young Woman Takes A Photo

Young Woman Takes A Photo by Nigel Smuckatelli.
Yes, that is a young woman, butt in air, taking a photo of the Miles-McLaren Ford GT40. Amazing what you could get away with back in 1965. Today, not only would security haul her butt away but she might end up with her butt in jail. BTW, nice butt. Photo courtesy of BARC Boys.

Gotta love this for the history, the story it tells, the GT40 (respect!) and that nice butt (small feet she has!!). Nigel is that GT40 on the race track or maybe pit entry or somewhere off-track? Not even a hay bale or tire barrier in sight, let alone the Armco and 12 foot high fences photographers have to cope with today. Can it be on the race-track? I'd die for views like she has.... wait, that could easily be literally true! Thanks for sharing this.

Dirk: Yes, this is on the track. I believe at what Sebring referred to as the Webster Turns. There were protective barriers of sorts back then. Note the beginning of a sand bank on the far right of the photo. The only reason you don't see any barriers at the far end of the photo is because that was open for emergency vehicle access to the track. However, the best that they had to protect the spectators back then was snow fencing and some hay bales. The "good ole days" of racing.

thanks Nigel - great days indeed! I wonder what the level of risk for photographers and spectators really was - we all know about the very big accidents with many deaths like the 77 killed at Le Mans in 1955 but didn't most events happen with no spectator incidents? The young lady in this photo clearly isn't put off by the risks. Good to see how things were.
