roses!
Flowers arrived on my birthday with no card. "Alex! I have a secret admirer! This is so cool!" "Oh, there wasn't a card? My parents sent them." D'OH. But they sure are pretty. Along with the sunflowers from Alex and the roses from... okay, I'm just spoiled. And my apartment is full of flowers.

My parents send me birthday flowers too, usually at work though! I love the cocked eyebrows and curious onlookers while I carry them back to my desk though ;)

We wish it was our birthday so we could party too.
My mother, frugal and cynical, taught me to be exceedingly suspicious of people who spend money on flowers because they are such useless gifts. The thought is good but the reality is poor. Ask the family to club together for scuba lessons next year. Or some sky diving. Or a pasta machine.

My own mother's birthday is on the 11th! Just one more reason to be one of the biggest Smitten Kitchen fans around. :) That and you always make cakes that make me want to run right into the kitchen and start separating eggs.
