    They just, like, rolled up on the beach. Which was cool until they got close and I actually said "They don't eat babies, do they?"

      They might! They hiss and give chase to things around their size... scared the crap out of me as a kid...

      I was at a hotel once that had a little swan pool, as well as some ducks. The swans killed and ate the ducklings right in front of my eyes. Meeean birds, swans.

      Ditto that. They're beautiful from afar, but them's some incredibly nasty critters.

      Ugh! Now I am going to completely freak out if they show up on a beach we're on again. I thought everyone would laugh at me for being such a city slicker that I was worried they'd eat my baby (in their defense, he's squishy and delicious). But I was right!

      Um, I'm a city slicker, too (resident of Chicago), but I will assuage your fears with some text from the venerable Wikipedia:

      "Swans feed in the water and on land. They are almost entirely herbivorous, although small numbers of aquatic animals may be eaten. In the water food is obtained by up-ending or dabbling, and their diet is composed of the roots, tubers, stems and leaves of aquatic and submerged plants"
