Where do they get off saying people have
rights?!

Sayna, they're all for rights, as long it's
not the right to eat a Boca Burger instead of KFC . See: AETA .

I'm really unfamiliar with this and that link
didn't really help. What's wrong with the
ACLU? They've always stood up for civil
rights, which, to me, is great.

I'm usually a big fan of the ACLU, BUT I'm
quite unhappy with their decision to drop
their initial opposition to the Animal
Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA), which labels
animal rights and eco-activists as criminals
and, yes, terrorists - even when engaging in
otherwise legal protest. So in this case,
the ACLU failed to stand up for the civil
liberties of an unpopular group. (For two
specific posts I wrote about the ACLU and
AETA, click here and here .)
Nor am I the only activist pissed at the
ACLU for kowtowing to the interests of
"animal enterprises" (who, I should
note, are the real "terrorists"
here). See, for example, this post by journalist Will Potter of GreenIsTheNewRed.com . By the by, GreenIsTheNewRed.com is a great source of info on the current
Green Scare.
I'd also like to single out a specific
point made by Potter in the post I linked to:
To some, though, the organization has always
been dogged by its darker days, when in 1940,
during the Red Scare, the ACLU formally barred communists from
leadership or staff positions . Meanwhile, the National Lawyers Guild took a beating for
refusing to name names and purge its members who also belonged to
communist organizations, but stood its
ground.
This time around, the National Lawyers
Guild was out front opposing the Animal
Enterprise Terrorism Act and the Green Scare . And this time around, the silence of the
ACLU spoke volumes.
Because of this, all my extra cash will be
going to the National Lawyer's Guild over the
ACLU. Sure, I still belong to their mailing
list, and will continue to act on their
alerts, but - pardon the pun - they won't get
a red (green?) cent from this
liberal/progressive/vegan
"terrorist".
