A claim of abuse and neglect of downed cattle in the Panhandle Region is a hot topic for the United States Humane Society. The Humane Society says they sent investigators across the country including here in Hereford as well as Clovis to affirm accusation of animal abuse.
The owner of the Hereford Livestock Exchange says the least they could do is tell him the news before it hit the press. The Humane Society says their goal was only to document the state of animal care and not single out livestock auctions...

The head of the union that represents 6,000 federal food inspectors told a congressional committee that the Agriculture Department tried to intimidate him and other employees who reported violations of regulations...
Union chief Stan Painter said that following a mad cow disease scare in 2003, he told superiors that new food safety regulations for slaughtered cattle were not being uniformly enforced. Painter said he was told to drop the matter, and when he didn't, was grilled by department officials and then placed on disciplinary investigative status...
He said that supervisors tell workers to "let the system work" rather than cite slaughterhouses for violations... Painter made the allegations at a hearing of the House Oversight and Government Reform domestic policy subcommittee, which was looking into slaughterhouse practices following humane violations at Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. in Chino, Calif., which led to the largest beef recall in U.S. history...

...Audits by the Agriculture Department's Food Safety and Inspection Service resulted in "noncompliance" determinations for a National Beef Packing Co. plant in Dodge City, Kan., and a Cargill Meat Solutions plant in Fresno, Calif., according to information obtained by The Associated Press under a Freedom of Information Act request.
Overall, the audits of 18 slaughterhouses found that some cattle were not being stunned properly on the first try, others were subject to overcrowding, and others had to be electrically prodded to get them to move. FSIS conducted the audits after humane handling violations at Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. in Chino, Calif., led to the largest beef recall in the nation's history...
