Last Katrina Dog Finds Home Here
by Leah George, Aug 23, 2006
When Hurricane Katrina struck nearly a year ago, Rochester did its part to help.
Our community sent people, supplies, and money to help those devastated by the storm.
We also opened up our hearts to the animals and animal shelters in need on the Gulf Coast. Lollypop Farm found new homes for about 40 Katrina dogs.
The last one to find a home now lives in Irondequoit.
Nancy Stewart adopted 'Magnes' about two months ago.
"You know you saw the devastation on TV for people. I couldn't imagine seeing it for dogs. You saw them and other animals on roofs trying to be fed by anybody. It was just heartbreaking to see that. So, I'm really not sure what she went through but I think she endured a lot," said Stewart.
Magnes lived in Jackson, Miss. She was pregnant when the hurricane struck.
Stewart does not know what became of the puppies but she hopes they all found loving homes like their mother.

I'm a native of Rochester, NY - and Irondequoit, to boot - so this particular Katrina story struck a chord.
Unfortunately, many more animals displaced by Hurricane Katrina are still in need of rescue and/or adoptive families.
