The Gate of the Bridge / La Puerta del Puente

The present Gate of the Bridge of the city of Córdoba (Spain) is located in an enclave where long ago also Roman doors were located as well as Muslim (Bab Alqantara, Bab al Wadi, Bab al Yazira or Bab al Sura). At Roman time it united the city with the Roman Bridge and the Via Augusta.

In the 16th century, the city council decided to equip to the city of one better gate due to the state in which was the one that was existed centuries ago. This way the 18 of February of 1572 the city council of the Licensed Corregidor Arteaga decides to construct the Gate of the Bridge.

The used reasons were mainly that she was one of the main doors of the city, (was therefore the one that received more transfer of people and supplyings), and the necessity to enlarge it and to embellish it. The Renaissance motifs in the construction of the door, were strong between the authorities of the city, due to the interest to clean up in their measure the city.

La actual Puerta del Puente de la ciudad de Córdoba (España) se sitúa en un enclave donde antaño también se localizaron puertas romanas así como musulmana (Bab Alqantara, Bab al Wadi, Bab al Yazira o Bab al Sura). En época romana unía la ciudad con el Puente Romano y la Via Augusta.

En el siglo XVI, el ayuntamiento decidió dotar a la ciudad de una mejor puerta debido al estado en que se encontraba la que se existía desde hacía siglos. De esta manera el 18 de febrero de 1572 el ayuntamiento del Corregidor Licenciado Arteaga acuerda construir la Puerta del Puente.

Los motivos esgrimidos fueron principalmente que era una de las puertas más principales de la ciudad, (era por tanto la que recibía más trasiego de personas y aprovisionamientos), y la necesidad de agrandarla y embellecerla. Los motivos renancentistas en la construcción de la puerta, fueron fuertes entre las autoridades de la ciudad, debido al interés por adecentar en su medida la ciudad.
