I dont know whats the big deal. its weak looking interface ... the voice feature is avaliable only on windows. even skype is better than this. Yahoo has all these features and more.. avtars for example.

Its just a case of one company making people go gaga about its products. its a same crappy IM with a protocol that has been around for 4 years. when jabber came out no one was excited because it was an intiative on the parts of some open source developers.

now google does it and somehow its cool. I really dont get it. its stupid to the point of being painful.

The reason this is cool is because it's simple and straight forward. You don't have to go through a billion features to do what you wanna do. Also, they are the first major ASP to use an open standard for it's IM service. In addition, they are planning on using the SIP protocol, which is also open. You can't condemn them because it doesn't have the bling that yahoo, MSN, et al. have. Google is all about simple. And sometimes, simple can be more useful.

BTW, what's wrong with using a mature protocol? It's scalable and open also. This is somehow bad?

Google Talk Beta spo0nman, Beta.

Also interesting is the quote from Georges Harik, Director of New Products at Google.

"We are going to try to be the first in the world to connect everyone to everyone."(I think he means no matter what client, no matter what protocol)

Also, I can see Google Talk saving all your chats for you so you can search them from any computer a la Personalized Search.

Spoonman's right. It's ridiculous. The only reason people like it is because it has the brand name "Google" on it. And everything Google makes is "Beta", Jedi. What makes you think it'll ever be any different?

It's not ridiculous. What's ridiculous is that companies won't allow you to chat with other networks. why should i have to worry about if my friend uses only MSN or not, being i don't use it? i don't like having to have 5 chat programs, and i do not like trillian, i have used it, its not appealing to me, and its still 5 seperate networks with 5 different usernames/passwords.

Google desktop was also beta when i first got it, now its officially released and they have a Google Desktop 2 beta out. Google has solid programmers and doesn't release crappy stuff like AIM(who's direct connect feature only works if its in a good mood) or Yahoo(which kept erroring whenever i tried to send or recieve a message, until i downloaded the newest client)

Google Talk is in beta, and no doubt they will add all the nice little features you all are complaining about it not having, the difference is, those features will work, and won't clutter the client.

the actual product is not yet what it could be, but i believe the excitement is from the fact that it's running on open-source Jabber. if they instantly capture their gmail user base as Talk users, they have leverage to go to Yahoo!, MSN, and AOL to open their systems (which they've started doing already). the 800 lb gorilla has entered the IM space and is ready to beat some heads.
