Eastern brown snake

Eastern brown snake by Stewart Macdonald.
Eastern brown snake (Pseudonaja textilis). I think he's a tad angry.

Eastern brown snakes are responsible for the most snake-related fatalities in Australia. Their nervous (but not aggressive) disposition, highly toxic venom (second only to the infamous inland taipan) and propensity for living around densely populated areas (attracted to the rodents that tend to hang out with us humans) make them a very interesting snake to photograph.

Fantastic shot. From the colourings, it looks like what went between my legs when I was clearing a gully the other day. Do the babies have less prominent barring? It had that colouration underneath (probably shouldn't be picking these things up ;)

Eastern brown snakes are really variable in colour. Some of them have no banding on the back, some of them are banded as babies, some of them are banded as adults. They generally all have the pink/red speckling underneath. Eastern browns are pretty common on the Gold Coast (I think that's where you are?).
