Mt. San Miguel continues to burn. San Diego wildfires.

Please tell me these are lights.
alpha_harblo: Fortunately the glow down here is simply from streetlights.
Jesus nos salvará
Davichi: Esperanzadamente los fuegos terminarán pronto.
Esta arvore ainda existe:
Looks like the surface of the sun.
ortzmet: Thanks. It was very hot.
Old growth trees hardly ever burn along with the rest of the vegetation as the fire wave goes by.
niiicedave: Very true. I've noticed that as well.
Well, it depends from the local fire force (thus, from heat). With the same heat, large trunks burn with more difficulty.

cosmic_flurk: Hahahaha. Everything reminds you of sci-fi, doesn't it? :-)

Kevin: Interesting comparison.

Bisayan lady: Indeed. Myself and the other spectators up there had to illegally park on the side of the road. It was fine until a cop showed up and started ticketing people. Fortunately the cop was several cars down from mine and I had plenty of time to leave.

You've certainly got some awesome pictures - too bad the result of all these great shots is a lot of destruction.

My boss was supposed to be flying out for a seminar in San Diego, but it just got cancelled last night. He didn't mind since he really wasn't looking forward to three days of smoke. Plus, San Diego needs all the hotel space they can come up with.

I hope things take a turn for the better today - I heard on the news that the Santa Ana winds are supposed to be dying down a little.

Art: Fortunately the fires are stating to get under control and are no longer heading towards my neighborhood.

Snowfire11Ro: Thank you. The winds have slowed down considerably - which is good for slowing down the fires, but bad for air quality since the smoke isn't getting blown away. And yeah, we definitely need hotel space for the evacuees.

Fire is a natural way for arid regions to clear out the accumulated biomass from years of growth. Of course if you live there it is a problem. Another reason not to live in California.
Posted 12 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

slworking2  Pro User  says:

hannibal1107: Very true. People that live out in the back country are now being asked to clear brush at least 100' (sometimes even 300') from the perimeters of their homes.

Hi, I'm an admin for a group called California Photographers, and we'd love to have this added to the group!

Wow. You know, I grew up in Southern California and spent plenty of summer nights out watching the hills burn. It's an impressive site but leaves a mess of the hills. Great photograph.

I hope you will consider adding this image to the California Photographers group. I received an email yesterday and it seems I have inherited the group as the longest active member so I am going to try and get it started. I started by clearing out all the images and started looking for a few people to help get it restarted. I think this image really shows off the state and would make a great addition.

Thanks
Darv

ikraaaam: Thanks. I've since updated the cost statistics - the new number is $21,000,000. I believe that's only the cost of fighting the fire, however. Not sure about the cost of the damage to the 250+ homes that were destroyed. And this is just one of several fires that were burning at the same time.
