Hurricane Katrina [Getting Information]

Hurricane Katrina [Getting Information] by slight clutter.
© slight clutter photography

As I was waiting for the rest of my Red Cross group to arrive at the Astrodome, I took some photos of the first bus (the "renegade bus," according to media) that arrived. It was full of children - my best estimate is about 85% children. The side of the school bus said "Orleans Parish Schools." Truly heartbreaking.

I just read the story of the renegade bus on nola.com. Fantastic picture. Can you believe that Judge Robert Eckels wasn't going to let these kids in because there weren't on "the list"!!

I am truly speechless....Your pictures are worth a thousand words! Thank you for taking pictures with care, I don't know how else to say it, I've seen some pics on the internet (some even here on flickr) that are so...I don't know how to put it other than careless. In your pics you can see that you care about these people, some pictures I've seen have been taken just for the sake of taking a picture. Thanks again for truly touching photos.

These are really great photos. I just wish that it wouldn't have taken Bush so long to get these people the help they really needed. They have already suffered enough. This photo shows that, kids were seperated from there mothers and fathers and tried to take care of themselves and siblings.

Why do people blame the President?
The young man who stole the bus, loaded it up, and drove to Houston, used his brains!!! It is not the President's responsibility to get the people help - start with your local government and work your way up to the state government. Hooray for that young man for saving this beautiful baby.

Bush is a f***** up president he's so quick to go to Iraq, sacrafice our troops, and liberate a country that doesn't want to be liberated. But when it comes to his people he doesn't do s**t...U know, I was watching the news earlier today and an African-American Male said something that really touched my heart. He said, "there are 70% percent of African-Americans in New Orleans that aren't getting help! Now if there were 70% of white people here asking for help they would get it right away". You know, I sat here for a while and thought to my self, "U know what? He is so right. Now, I'm not saying the president is racist, but let's just say that this country's minorities are last on the list. When I say minorities, I mean the population of poverty laden neighborhoods of the Katrina affected cities. We all know that the majority of New Orleans population is less fortunate. But take the tsunami victims of Indonesia for example, the less fortunate, they got help right away! In a nutshell, I don't see why we don't get the same attention or better yet the same responce for OUR less fortunate. That being the Katrina victim. Charity starts at Home!!!

I'm giving notice. All soap-box posts (regardless of pro-Bush or anti-Bush) from here on out that are left by people who don't even have a photo in their stream will be deleted. I'm not trying to be a hardass, I just really don't think my posts are about politics, they are about the stories and struggles of individuals. Thanks.

Thanks to individuals like the Red Cross officials who have given up themselves to this kind of work. The foto reminds me of the January 6, 1999 invasion of our beautiful city, Freetown. Only those who have experienced calaminities such as the invasion of our city and terrible huricane like this could understand what vulnerable groups like the children, elderly and the handicapped are now faced with.

Is this the bus that was "stolen" by a teenager who drove 7 hours to safety, picking up people on the way? Incredible story, I read someplace that he could even face prosecution for stealing that bus. Give the kid a medal I say. This reminds me of the reports that came after 911, where people who chose to disregard the orders to "stay put" survived, while the unfortunate who actually listened to law enforcement died. It seems that self organization is necessary to survive when governments fail.

I am so proud of the older children that have taken on the responsibility of taking care of their younger sibblings. I looked at the picture of the little girl holding her baby sister. I'm sure her mother and father needed her to be strong and look after her sister, and bless her heart, she did just that. God bless her!!!

My heart goes out to the people of New Orleans. To all the children that have survived, I am sure God has something special in store for them! That is the reason they are here. I for one have only recently found out that I have 2 gransnephew that were living in Mississippi. I truly hope that they have survived this ordeal. I am sure what the story is with that young man who drove that bus, but if it was to save lives we really should commend him. We need more people like that in this world - a caring heart! Unfortunately I am not able to help I am all the way in Jamaica, but my prayers are with you all, both the victims and the persons and organisations that have a big heart.
