Like most hubs of China's manufacturing boom, the outskirts of Hangzhou has seen many "chengzhongcun" or urban vilages appear in the last ten years. The land is neither urban nor rural, a patchwork of thouands of self-built tenements several floors tall sitting among dirt roads and fields, among motorway junctions and blue-roofed factories. These self-built tenements around Hangzhou seem to be more uniform in appearance (most of them featuring ornate spires) and less cramped together (i.e more livable) than those in Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
