Sketching on the beach, Summer 2012. The trouble with sketching in very bright sunlight is that without sunglasses you just get flat, white light across everything. And with sunglasses? you think you're painting in dark shades but they all look much flatter without your sunglasses. Any solutions anyone? No chance of sitting in a shady spot here, or I would have tried that.

I had the same problem in Mass. last week. The umbrella blew away and I was left in blinding light. The only solution for me is to be under an umbrella. I can't see and colour with sunglasses on.

.........sketch in an air- conditioned indoor cafe! :-)
      Awesome sketch...especially given the circumstances!

I haven't sketched at a beach recently, but I find sunglasses change the colors too much but hats work. Sometimes I think a darker colored, brimmed hat works better with the glare. Which seems counter-intuitive with wanting a hat that's going to keep you cool. Which is why I’ve packed an off-white sunhat AND a brown one for SD.

I love this series at the beach Suhita. Maybe a little of your fleet-handed approach will rub off on me this week. See you soon!!!!

, I'm not going to be there: My being on the Facebook site for this one was because I really, really wanted to come this time, but maybe next year.... but I'm going to see SD through all of your eyes: I see Liz has been sketching up a storm already. It is going to be a fun rest of the week following you all through this. But I admit, I wish I were there!!!

Great beach scenes Suhita, oh to be sketching in the summer again! I agree about sunglasses, a hat works for me.

Now for a recommendation for a good, wide-brimmed hat... and a stool. I need both of those for my trip to India this winter!

I'm disappointed! Another time our paths will cross face to face! I love my 2 wide brimmed hats. They've got spf50 in the fabric. One I ordered through AMazon, www.amazon.com/Scala-Ultraviolet-Protection-Drawstring-Si... and the other at TJMaxx (for cheaper but you can't choses any color you want). As for stool: Walkstool 18" (Marc Holm mentioned it in his SD course despcription and then Liz Steel mentioned it on her FB). Look at my Flickr Photostream, I posted a photo of it set up at one of my drawing sites.

You're lucky to have the sunshine. We just get rain! Paint it flat and bright! Your pic is great!
