A note to my customers

A note to my customers by Skell Dagger.
I think I'm going to withdraw the free male newbie starter kit from XStreet and the mall. It's a little... disheartening when your freebie items are pretty much the only things people 'buy'. :-/

Before Christmas, the store went for nine days with that newbie kit the only thing being taken. Yes, it's nice to offer something free that helps male newbie avatars out, but it's also not the greatest of feelings for any content creator (especially one that actually underprices his items because he doesn't want to over-charge for his work) when they see nothing in their sales list but 'freebie', 'freebie', 'freebie'.

My prices are hardly ‘break the bank’ as you’ll see if you take the time to browse the store blog, my XStreet account, or even come and visit the mall inworld. But I’m beginning to understand why many content creators are withdrawing freebies. We offer them, not only as free gifts, but also in the hope that people might stick around, check out the rest of our items, like what they see, and maybe spend a few L$. But lately, people just TP in, grab the freebie, then TP right out again within seconds.

No matter how well-priced your items are, how well-made, how well laid-out; you’re never going to turn those freebie-grabbers into customers if they just wait long enough for that freebie to rez, grab it, then run.

Yeah, It’s very, very disheartening.

One thing I like about freebie's is that I can like the essence of a shop but not have enough time to really decide what I want, and I'll grab a freebie.

This affords me a couple things.

First , it's a reminder of the spot I was at, and hopefully you do include a LM in your freebie folder I also like a little friendly note, example: Hi, I hope you like this sample pack..etc...please come to my shop and buy some stuff.... ok it's a crap example but you see what I am getting at, make it personal feeling, make it with your personality. Maybe you are already doing this, I am not directing this at you or your goods, just saying what I like. I am not that familiar with your stuff.

Most people probably won't read the notecard, don't get hung up on it, but those that do read notecards are going to dig it. Title your notecard with something compelling to open it.

Two, I like trying a merchants quality before I might want to go on a spree at their shop. I can think of many times after going on a spree I was a bit disappointing because of the disparage between the box art and the actual items.

I may pick up a freebie and it may be month before I actually get to it. There are many times when I will love the item and go.."man I wonder what else they have done"..and head to the shop.

I think you should leave it or modify the kit, but not pull it.

Hang in there.

Thanks for commenting, Ravenelle :)

All of those are great points, and I do agree with them. The male newbie starter kit that I have out is a tad different though, because it's not actually my own items. I'm no clothing designer (wish I had that skill, but I don't!) so I scoured hundreds of freebie places for the best items I could find, and put together that kit, because there are precious few 'one stop shop' kits for newbie male avis.

It has clothing, skins, shapes, a few useful things like a flight feather, basic AO and radar HUD, and the NCI Basics notecards, plus landmarks and the like. It's not a bad kit, for all that it's the 'same old' freebie stuff, but it has been hand-sorted and doesn't contain (in my view, anyway) any crap stuff.

I do have a freebie of my own work (I make skyboxes, homes, arbors and multitudinous other things *g* together with my partner), and your comment has made me think about one thing: while there is an LM in my freebie box, there's no notecard from me. So thank you for that tip. I'm about to go inworld and I'll get cracking on that :)
