Tree house...

Tree house...

It’s strange how certain objects attract your attention when you least expect it!

The above image comes from the approach road to Port Robinson in the district of Hurunui, North Canterbury. I’d finished photographing for the day and was driving back home, when I noticed the beautiful evening sun beginning to shine nicely on a derelict farm building. I pulled over, grabbed my camera gear and quickly searched the area for a suitable composition. Whilst up against time, I was fortunate to capture the subtle light as the winter sun began to set!

Fields of gold...

Fields of gold...

For me, photography is not just about capturing the scene itself... but also the thrill and excitement of the journey, both before and after capturing the scene!

Fields of Rapeseed (Brassica napus) surrounding the township of Waddington in the district of Selwyn, Canterbury – located approximately 50km northwest of Christchurch.

Looking back at last spring... I’d spoken to a friend earlier in the week, regarding any nearby fields with plenty of spring colour for that particular time of year. He suggested I take a drive out to the district of Selwyn, and gave me details of where to find such fields!

It didn’t take me long to find a stunning area. However, what I didn’t appreciate was the effort that would be involved to choose a suitable location in which to photograph from. I can’t quite remember exactly how many farmers fields I walked up and down, along with numerous barbed wire fences to leap over!

After scouting out the area for well over an hour, I finally decided on my chosen spot in which to photograph from... and pleased I was too – what an enjoyable morning’s photography in such beautiful surrounds!

Having recently purchased some Neutral Graduated Filters and Polariser, I look forward to re-visiting this area next year.

Devastation...

Devastation...

Waikuku Beach in the district of Waimakariri, North Canterbury - approximately 30km north of Christchurch.

I look at this natural landscape on this poignant day, and can't help but think how it reminds me of the destruction and devastation that rocked the city of Christchurch and its surrounds... when a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck, a year ago to this day!

Todays post is in memory of the 185 people who tragically lost their lives in the February 22nd Christchurch Earthquake... Rest in Peace.

Camera Model: Nikon D700; Lens: Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G; Focal length: 20mm; Aperture: f/22; Exposure time: 2.0s; ISO: 200

Through the cutting...

Through the cutting...

Weka Pass - is an impressive gorge located in North Canterbury, between the townships of Waipara and Waikari. The railway line is of historic rural value, using both vintage steam and diesel-electric locomotives on a 13km scenic route, passing through the unique limestone landscape of the Weka Pass.

During the 1880’s workers had to move tonnes of clay and limestone by hand to form the cuttings and large embankments, and took just over two years to complete... an incredible achievement!

This particular area was once under sea level, which explains why some of the surrounding limestone rocks have weathered into unusual shapes.

Tumbling down...

Tumbling down...

The upper fringes of Castle Hill rocks in the district of Selwyn, Canterbury. It’s a challenging place to photograph, as there are so many options to choose from. I always allow myself plenty of time to explore this stunning, and somewhat unique landscape.

If you’re a regular follower of my PhotoBlog, then you’ve probably noticed how much I appreciate this particular area of Canterbury. It’s hard to describe the landscape exactly, other than surreal... with the limestone rocks and boulders forming all kinds of wonderful shapes and sizes!
