Bona drag

Last in The London Chain - sequins
Next in The London Chain - St George's flag
Bona drag by Simon Crubellier.
A cunning plan to stop Trafalgar Square filling up with post-match beer-boys - hold this year's LGBT Pride carnival there.

gosh, i hope i don't come across as sounding insensitive for saying this, because i'm just trying to be clever, but...

is this what they mean by 'the stately old homos of England?'

You speak "polari"?

Thanks very much everyone - Midori no Saru, yes, Martin Degville has risen from the grave.

Princess Valium, very much so.

Loopzilla, a few phrases, I'm fascinated by languages generally, and underworld/subcultural slang and cant in particular. Plus I've an interest in it because I'm just generally interested in the history and culture of London's many subcultures over the years, not to mention a big fan of Round the Horne.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polari

Round the Horne - featuring Julian and Sandy. There was a bit of a backlash from the community when they brought polari to the public's attention...

These days, we have fake Jamaican words being uttered in London by youth some of whom could not point to the West Indies an map.

That being said, my thesis is that constant language invention is a human only activity. No other entity exhibits that facility. The growth of "txt" as a lanuage is one example. Computer's do not invent language at the race we do, and neither do chimps.

Txt is a code, though, not a language. The same is true of Polari.

You mean a language is not an encoding?
Posted 42 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

Midori no Saru  Pro User  says:

No - a language has its own internal logic and consistency, and way of constructing knowledge about the world. A code is merely a means of representing information. A language can be encoded, but a code is not a language. Txt and Polari are codes that exist on top of the language of English. If they had their own grammar, they would be a language. Example - CUL8R is just a code for "See you later" ;)

Sorry Simon - my fault - I've turned this picture of drag queens into a seminar! :)

Is there a language of the Internet?

Having trawled through the many hundreds of Europride pictures, I have to say that this one is just in a class of its own. Absolutely brilliant. The facial expressions, the standing outside the pub, the beer, the England flags, the spectacles, chatting on her mobile phone (? - I assume) - wonderful portraiture and intimacy but also a summation of all that was going on in Trafalgar Square that day.

Some people do indeed wear spectacles at a spectacle.

But some people appear with no underwear..... "commando".

It's your Flickricon that's the reason for the confusion. I still have Peter Cook ( in my brain) as being how you look. He could easily have got away with the sequins.

For anyone baffled by the above exchange, I had a troll in my photostream for a bit but unfortunately he was so thoroughly useless at it that it took me a few days to work out that he was actually trying to be offensive.
