Banksy

Banksy by Simon Crubellier.
Regent's Park Road, Camden. Painted out some time on the 9th or 10th of February, 2008 and restored within the week, but looking rather battered now...

(30 June 2008) Now with a Mexican knock-off....

(8 October 2008) Also...

One wonders how much of the brick was exposed? or was the brick portion repainted as brick-like?

Ah, Banksy pictures on Flickr should be called "Banking views on Banksy." really :). In a similar way, I had the most views when I posted a "Jeff Aerosol" ( Perhaps France's eponimous and more famous Banksy). Not much to do with photography, all the credit should go really to the artist. Same here. But again if it was not for your eyes and camera, I would have never seen this! So thanks. Another excellent Banksy of course!

Crikey, thanks everyone. grebo guru, I'll check tomorrow morning and report back.

EricGjerde, thanks for sorting out the attribution.

Orhan T, you're so right it hurts - until Royal de Luxe came along, my most viewed picture had been a Banksy for *months*.

Thank you very much for the comments, views and faves everyone - Phineas H, I think this is only a couple of days old.

scurvesahead - Banksy, the artist responsible, is an increasingly popular English stencil graffiti artist. He has a website where you can see more of his work and find out more about him.

And grebo guru - the bricks are painted on!

The White Cube Gallery (in Shoreditch, Banksy's regular stomping ground), also has this very picture; except, the wall is brick painted white in the first place (i.e., the 'real' brick of the picture is the white bricks painted to appear um, brick colour).

Simon Crubellier, I start being tempted to go and take a shot of this myself too! Over 3000 views, is incredible really! :)

Not a single conmmentator attempted to comment on the substance of it though. I will give it a try, with the danger of looking totally foolish. I may be totally wrong though. On the other hand, this is probably different thing, to different people.

For me this is all about the Victorian times really. A housemaid hiding the dirt under the carpet, and throwing it towards the poor (the bricks for me represent the poor, whereas the white curtain, is the courtain between the upper classes and the masses)

Simon Crubellier  Pro User  says:

Thanks once again, everyone - wojofoto and Orhan T, I was a little amazed, too. I think this was the first photo of this one uploaded, which probably helped; I've seen at least two others on Explore since then, by acb and mappamundi.

Orhan T - I see a lot of Banksy's work as being explicitly about power relationships in one way or another. I saw this as being about how the sheer volume of cheap immigrant labour needed to sustain the luxury lifestyles of London's ever increasing population of the super-rich is itself something that gets swept behind a curtain. And how if you don't respect the people who work for you, they'll find simple and effective ways to make life that little bit less pleasant for you... but that might just be down to my current mood.

mappamundi - I am horrified to learn that I have inadvertently participated in one of Bonio's schemes. But it does go some way towards explaining why this got more than 1000 hits a day for a while.

The day after that was printed The Independent had to print a retraction - Banky's people had told them that Banksy had never worked to commmission for a newspaper and was unlikely to start!

well some quality journalism going on there then. the clarification isn't that clear is it? note that the independent doesn't specifically retract the statement that it was commissioned by them....
