Screengrab for my blog article on Google Maps new Terrain feature.

Out in unpopulated areas, the new Terrain feature gives indication of elevations or altitudes like in this pic of the Grand Canyon. The images closely resemble USGS maps in cases like this.

Within major cities, you see wireframes of large buildings instead of topological representations.
