Nicey Jane hexies

Newer Older

I'm hoping to make a table runner or... a coverlet if I'm feeling ambitious. o__O

Note:
I was thinking of posting a mini tutorial but megsinri2010 was kind enough to share the link to an online tutorial. You can see it here: www.quiltingboard.com/t-27345-1.htm

Depending on the desired size, the outside hexagon should be 1" larger than the center hexagon all the way around. For example: if your center hexagon measures 2 1/2 ", your outside hexagon should measure 4 1/2".

I do not have the templates mentioned instead I used EZ Quilting Hexagon template by Darlene Zimmerman. This one: www.simplicity.com/p-1479-hexagon-acrylic-shapes.aspx

Just like the online tutorial, you can sew the folds using your sewing machine (has anyone tried blindhem stitch?) or (punish yourself like I did) by hand.

My word! Your comment at the top reminded me of a story my mum told me about how when they were little, she and her sister decided to make a family heirloom quilt. So they started. And not longe after that, they decided that it would be a family heirloom teacosy instead ;)

So far, it's the size of a placemat. At this rate I'm hoping for a table runner. Hahaha!

I was looking at these again, they are so beautiful...but you ARE a glutton for punishment, wow, I cannot imagine hand stitching all of those.

I absolutely love your fresh take on an old pattern with your choice of fabrics! Tell me you bought them in a collection because I don't think I have what it takes to pick out pretty fabrics like you did. Where did you get your fabrics? Just beautiful!

Thanks! The fabric collection is called Nicey Jane by Heather Bailey. You can search etsy for these fabrics or yo can try Quiltshops.com. Have fun!

This might be an incredibly stupid question (forgive me, I'm new to quilting/sewing) but how do you connect each hexagon to the next? The photo looks like everything is hand stitched. (I don't have the patience or time to hand stitch the whole thing.) What kind of stitch would you use if you were using a machine?

According to the person who did the mini tutorial, she suggested using zig-zag stitch. You can click on the link below the photo above. Have fun!

How did you stitch them together? Doesn't look like the standard whip stitch. Mattress stitch perhaps?

    These are so cute :D
I've seen the link and it looks simple enough (if you don't count the fiddly bits), but how have you managed to attach them together without any visable seams? It's been killing me because I would love to be able to make something out of these x
