Chomp and Stomp 2009 by The Lilac Breasted Roller

Chomp and Stomp 2009

Serving up some chili at the 2009 Cabbagetown Chomp and Stomp Festival. The four of us each made two 5 gallon batches of chili, both vegetarian.

Our booth Smokin' Beans won the prize for best overall individual chili and took 2nd place in the best vegetarian chili out of 90 plus entries. Plus some folks who had never heard of tempeh before got to try something new.

At 11am people were hovering around our booth waiting for a sample but we could not serve until noon. By 2pm all of our chili was gone. (WABE claims that over 10,000 people attended)

The judges included Restaurant Eugene chef Linton Hopkins and chef and restaurant owner Kevin Rathbun.

The was the first time any of us had entered the contest or made any amount of food close to 5 gallons!

Smokin Beans Booth 2009 Chomp and Stomp Winners by The Lilac Breasted Roller

Smokin Beans Booth 2009 Chomp and Stomp Winners

Serving up his batch of tempeh chili, it won best individual chili award at the Chomp and Stomp 2009 festival in Cabbagetown, the first time a vegetarian chili won.

One upset carnivore exclaimed in an online forum that "to me, giving a vegetarian chili the Grand Prize is just as ridiculous as giving a Best Burger award to a veggie burger."

Broadcast @ Earl by The Lilac Breasted Roller

Broadcast @ Earl

On tour with Atlas Sound. Their set was a bit of a yawner but at least the video behind them looked good. Atlas Sound played a fine set after.
