Stranger #17

Stranger #17

Sophie was listening to music with her heavy set earphones and going through some vintage records on the street market in southbank. I saw her with the glow of sun hitting her red hair from behind, and that set her distinctively apart.

Unlike last few strangers, I dint have to double guess if this was the right person or not, and without a wasting a second I walked up to her to ask if I could photograph her. I was having trouble getting used to the 135mm distance, plus her 6’ tall height didn't help much either.

I have to admit, and I may be jut naïve here , she seemed too geeky at first and probably that was what encouraged me to take her photo. As it turned out she was pleasantly soft spoken and quite graceful. It wouldn’t be fair to just present one photograph, since I think I could not capture her character anyway. Here is a couple more shots of her.

This picture is #17 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at www.100Strangers.com

Stranger #16

I had walked past Steve hurriedly on my way to see a friend. (Southbank is by far the best place for meeting chilled out strangers) So it was more of a “Should I or Shouldn’t I…. com’on don't miss it” as I was contemplating taking his picture looking at him. I reckon he did see me standing awkwardly half way into my step looking back at him aswell. But, he was quick to agree for his photo to be taken.

I had seen this photo, Portrait of an Indian Man Smoking a Cigarette , taken by one of my Flickr contacts, and I wanted to remake it (yes, steve was smoking aswell). I was testing my new 135mm range throughout the day and found it to be quite difficult to control it compared to my 50mm - the DOF and the distance between me and him, etc.... So although I had a shot in mind that I couldn't actually get, I was very pleased with the quality of the images i got. It needs a bit getting used to I guess.

Pl. do critique- good or bad. or even nasty.
