LAYYY! I painted the background first using
transparent watercolors that are less
permanant than other hues. I did this by
swirling around some water and a few colors
until I had covered it slightly. Then I
threw some Rock Salt on it and let it soak up
the paint in areas and let it dry. That's
how I got the unique speckled style. Then as
I painted the girls on it I was able to scrub
out parts and paint in darker areas behind
them to give them a sense of dimension.
Lastly I finished the painting by laying in
more washes so that all the edges were
covered.

truly amazing... i love it so much! is it
possible to use regular table salt instead?

Well yes and no. You will get a different
effect from each type of salt. Table salt
makes a tiny snowflake effect that is still
pretty but won't give the big comet effect of
the rock or kosher salt.
