The little teapot contains sugar syrup which is added to cut the bitter taste. Note the plastic ring that's been placed on the spout - it helps to direct the flow of the syrup, but also protects the delicate porcelain from getting chipped. The lid of the teapot has a knotted red string on it that's attached to the handle; it's partly decorative, but also prevents the lid from getting separated from the pot (or crashing to bits anywhere).
