studio island
Apartment Therapy week three:
One big project...I got rid of my huge drafting table under the window. It seemed like such a good idea at the time -- I had never had a space with good natural light. But on getting to know my space more, it turns out that the natural light is best in the centre of the room, while the area just under the window suffers from constantly changing bright light and shadow. The old table had bookshelves as legs, so those have been turned and sit flush under the window and the idea was to build an island to sit in the middle of my workspace, without losing storage. We built this from two kitchen units, secured together. The side where I work has working drawers and a cupboard -- the other side has matching doors but they don't really open. The countertop was an offcut for £10, and it matches the other piece of offcut in the room on my sewing table which we made last year, so bonus! Now I just need to get the rest of the room tidied and everything in its place, since I pretty much up-ended it to make the big changes over the past two weeks. But love, love, love the island. This week's Cure job was the landing strip...which was actually fine as is, but I wanted to add some pictures...so now it has become a big job as one of the pictures didn't agree with the wall and came crashing down, cracking the plaster and marking the wall. As I type this, the wall (which is thankfully small) is drying with primer and tomorrow I'll pick up a roller so I can repaint it. And investigate a different way of hanging the pictures!
