In the 1500s, an enemy army took over the city of Salzburg depriving them of food and drink. Completely depleted of food, the local people were ready to surrender until they found this lone oxen roaming the streets. They paraded the oxen in front of the army to prove they were not hungry and in the night painted it black to show that they did indeed have enough livestock for the people to survive. The army was completely befuddled and retreated, leaving the Salzburgians alone.
