Open Processing!

Just wanted to give a quick plug to ITP student Sinan Ascioglu’s new site: www.openprocessing.org — a community “flickr-like” site for Processing sketches. It’s terrific work and I’m hoping students in my courses will find it helpful for organizing portfolios of their work. I’m hoping to be able to help Sinan by figuring out a way to auto-generate thumbnails from uploaded Processing sketches. Seems to be the one missing piece (it’s a pain in the neck to generate those screenshots yourself). Any ideas?

For the thumbnails problem:
If your webserver supports java you could create a commandline-tool in java + processing that can generate the thumbs for you and dump them in the right directory. Don't know if it will be easy though.

Basically, the website works the way that, users zip their applet folders and upload the zip file, which then gets extracted in the server. So the processing-generated .jar file is there. Do you mean i can create a java app which can run this .jar file and get thumbnail out of it?

Yep. Yahoo uses this technique to compress javascript and css files in their YUI Compressor.

developer.yahoo.com/yui/compressor/

The tool would probably need the *.pde file to generate the thumbnails and a fast server if sketches are heavy on graphics.
